spring break trip
Every spring break, the MIT Chapter of Habitat for Humanity sends 14 MIT students on a trip to a Habitat affiliate somewhere in the United States.
In 2010, we will be going to Anderson County, Tennessee, from Saturday, March 20, 2010 to Saturday, March 27, 2010. During the week, we will be working at local Habitat build sites. There will also be opportunities to explore the area and hike in the Smoky Mountains. Click here to apply!
In 2008, we traveled to Bogalusa, Louisiana, an impoverished city north of New Orleans, where the median household income level is $19,261. We helped to complete Amanda Court, a cul-de-sac of six Habitat homes, as well as several other Habitat houses under construction. This trip is featured on MIT Tech TV: click here to see more!
In 2009, we worked with the Lake-Sumter Habitat affiliate in Eustis, Florida. We painted one of their thrift stores and nailed in roofing and rafters on several of their homes.
Spring break trip participants usually only pay for their airfare, as generous grants from the Public Service Center and the SAO have covered fees, van rentals, and food in the past. Spring break trip participants also raise money by conducting fundraisers on campus, such as the Green Building Stair-a-thon in February 2009.
