The MIT Chapter of Habitat for Humanity prides itself on hosting build days, spring break trips, and campus events at little to no cost to volunteers and participants. However, these programs come at quite a cost. A typical build day costs $250 for van rentals, gasoline, and food. The spring break trips costs approximately $4,500 for a group of 14 students, not including airfare.
Additionally, MIT Habitat has started conversations about sponsoring Habitat homes both locally and globally. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Boston is renovating foreclosed homes in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and has invited MIT to join the program. MIT Habitat has also made contact with the Habitat affiliate in Kenya about sponsoring an MIT home in Kenya, which would cost approximately $3,000. We began fundraising for these home sponsorship initiatives in 2008, and will continue in 2009, hopefully raising enough to make a sizeable donation in 2010.
